Eris…said by some to be the sister of Ares in the Hellenic tradition, is the Goddess of Chaos. In the Roman Pantheon She is Discordia. Some sources say she is the daughter of primordial Nyx (Night).
Her most famous myth surrounds the wedding feast of Peleus and Thetis. All the Gods and Goddesses were invited except Eris…but She came anyway…and threw a Golden Apple into the banquet that had the words “For the Fairest” ie “most beautiful”…which provoked an argument amongst Aphrodite, Hera and Athena. In some versions, Zeus orders the three to go to Mount Ida where Paris can decide which is the most beautiful. Aphrodite offers Paris the love of Helen of Troy in exchange for choosing Her…which he does and abducts her starting the Trojan war.
