Baphomet Charm Necklace

The iconic image of Baphomet as we know it today was created by the occultist Eliphas Lévi in 1855 and published in his book Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic (originally written in French, with the most famous — and often debated — English translation by Arthur Edward Waite).

He understood Baphomet not as a figure of evil, but as a Hermetic and alchemical symbol of the union of opposites, expressing the ancient principle found in the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus:

“As above, so below.”

He also described Baphomet as a representation of what he called the Astral Light — the subtle medium or substance of the astral plane that transmits the Will of the practitioner in magical workings.
